In today’s world of digital prints and mass production, we continue to preserve the traditional hand-blocked batik method — a craft made with hot wax, copper blocks, fabric dye, and skilled hands.
Each piece takes time to create. From stamping the motif to dyeing the fabric, every step is done carefully by hand. This is what makes handmade batik different, meaningful, and truly one of a kind.
1. Stamped by Hand
The copper block is dipped into hot wax and pressed onto the fabric by hand, one stamp at a time.
This step requires patience, focus, and experience. Because it is done by hand, each fabric carries its own small differences and unique character. The artisan needs to stamp with care so the motif connects beautifully across the fabric.
2. Dyed with Care
After the wax motif is stamped onto the fabric, the fabric goes through the dyeing process.
The waxed areas help to protect parts of the fabric from absorbing dye, allowing the batik motif to appear beautifully.
Some batik fabrics may go through more than one round of waxing and dyeing to create richer colours and patterns. After dyeing, the wax is removed to reveal the completed hand-blocked batik design.
3. Sewn into Everyday Pieces
Once the batik fabric is ready, it is carefully cut and sewn into Chantek Batik pieces.
As handmade batik motifs are not always exactly the same, our team pays attention to the fabric placement, cutting, and finishing of each piece.
